History of University of Medicine and Pharmacy HCMC

The Saigon University of Medicine and Pharmacy was founded in 1947. In 1961, it was divided into the University of Medicine and the University of Pharmacy.The Saigon University of Dentistry was founded in 1964.

 The Medical School of the Southern provinces was founded in the South-eastern Base of the Resistance zone in 1965.


In 1976, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city was founded as the unity of the Universities of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry and the Southern Medical School. It is composed of three faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology.

In 1995, the Faculty of Fundamental Sciences was founded.

In 1998, two other Faculties joined the University: the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Techniques originating from the Central Medical Technical School III, and the Faculty of Traditional Medicine from the Tue Tinh National Medical school 2.

In 1999, the Faculty of Public Health was founded based on the Public Health department of the University and the Department of Health Organisation and Management of the HCM City Institute of Hygiene and Public Health.

In 2000, the University Medical Center was founded.

Therefore, from 2000 on, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh city has been composed of 7 Faculties: the Faculty of Fundamental Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Traditional Medicine, the Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Nursing and Medical Techniques, the Faculty of Public Health and one University Medical Center .
